If you don’t like your coffee black, that’s ok. I don’t either unless it’s brewed with a French Press or Aeropress. It also has to be my favorite flavor of bean!!
If this is you and you want to add something that is a little healthier than sugar…you need to try some maple syrup in your coffee. (Don’t look at me like I’m crazy and just hear me out!)
In this post, I will explain why you should give it a try. It’s not the magic cure for replacing sugar but it is defiantly a better choice.

What is Maple Syrup?
Maple Syrup is a natural sweetener that is found in the sap of sugar maple trees. It is made up of 2/3rds sucrose (table sugar).
The two main steps to producing maple syrup are drilling a hole in the maple tree so the sap can drain, then boiling it until the water evaporates. It leaves a thick sugary syrup that you filter the impurities from.
Then…Voila…maple syrup!

Is Maple Syrup Healthy?
Maple syrup is mostly sugar but what sets it apart are the minerals and antioxidants.
It contains:
- Calcium
- Iron
- Potassium
- Zinc
- Manganese
Maple syrup contains over 20 different antioxidants according to NIH. But in order to reap the benefits, you will need to grab a darker maple syrup because the lighter ones don’t contain as much goodness as the darker ones.
You also need to know that maple syrup has a lower glycemic index than sugar so you won’t get that “sugar high” followed by the low after. You should still be cautious about how much you consume because no matter the source, too much sugar is not good for over all health.
It’s definitely healthier than artificial sweeteners and regular table sugar!

Is Pancake Syrup as Good?
Nope! It absolutely is not! Pancake syrup is mostly high fructose corn syrup. So for sure want to steer clear of that stuff, even on your pancakes!
Should You Try Maple Syrup in Coffee
Absolutely! Maple syrup has a smooth, rich taste so I would recommend experimenting with it in different kinds of coffee to see what tastes the best to you.
If you choose the right brewing method and the freshest bean, you shouldn’t need to add much sweetener to your cup if any at all.
Maple syrup also dissolves fairly quickly in your coffee and doesn’t crystalize very much so that’s a plus.
